RE: WIFI on the move!

According to this WIRED article
Autonet uses
"... nondenominational network agreements (with both Sprint and Verizon) the router will simply connect to the tower with the strongest EVDO broadband signal, regardless of carrier."
so, maybe in Canada, they also have agreements with providers there.
This sounds too good to be true. Sure would like to hear from some more subscribers. If it *is* true ... I want one!
McGoo - what did you pay for the initial purchase? And, what is the 'instalation'? According to the WIRED article - you can just grab the device, plug it into power, and you're in business

RE: Aircards

Verizon does have a 39.99/mo plan
but you only get 50 MB of data transfer for that. Not much.

Also works in Canada for no extra cost.
That's huge! I looked on their website and can't find any information about service coverage areas, or plans. Can anyone give me a link for this detail?

RE: CELL PHONE INTERNET ACCESS

We have Verizon and the LG eNV. It works quite well as an internet connection with the Mobile Office Kit. I wrote about it in detail in this blog post
At the time, I wasn't sure what it was going to cost me. They gave us one month free, and since we only used it a few days here and there it took a while to go thru that one month. this month, we were finally charged and they do indeed prorate the $60/month by the days you use it. Here's the line item from my Verizon wireless bill:
BBA Connect 5GB/$.25mb - 08/12 - 08/23 23.22
I think it's a fantastic option for occasional travelers. I also wrote about this in a newsletter article
As for turning it into a 'hotspot', you'll need a router. The folks at EVDOinfo.com can advise you on the best one.

RE: Wireless connection keeps dropping

Sounds like a power setting issue. I don't know what SP3 would have to do with that - but check your wireless network, properties, configure, power management. Make sure it is not allowing the adapter to be turned off for saving power.
See this article at WiFiSavvy.com for more details.

RE: Photo album software recommendation

Picasa - hands-down the best, easiest, fastest way to manage all those photos. And, it's one-click easy to upload them to a web photo album. All free from Google. We love Picasa. We teach seminars on it all the time - see tutorials and articles on our website at www.geeksontour.com
But, you said 'print' a photo album - that sounds kinda like scrapbooking to me. Picasa can print photos - but it doesn't allow you to place them where you want on a page, you can't add titles or captions on the page, and you can't add other graphic elements.
For scrapbooking you would need something like Photoshop Elements - but that takes some learning. Check out www.scrapbook.com for LOTS of info.
I think Printmaster by Broderbund sounds like the easiest. They have a free version, but the main version is only $20. If you already have Powerpoint - that works well. Or a free alternative would be Google Docs presentation, or OpenOffice Presentations. Even a word processing program like Word would work well.

RV Parks Directory CD

I'm doing a review of a CD from CoolRVToyz.com for the RV.net blog. It's called 'The Ultimate RV Parks and Camgrounds Directory.' It includes 'More Than 50,000 RV Parks, Campgrounds and RV-Related Camping Services' It's in POI format compatible with Garmin NUvi, Streetpilot and Zumo; TomTom, Magellan, Microsoft Streets and Trips, Delorme Street Atlas, Garmin Mapsource and other trip planning programs that can import points-of-interest.
I'm wondering if anyone here has actually used it? I can play with it and give my opinion, but I only have Microsoft Streets and Trips. It would be great to hear from someone who has used it - and maybe with some of the other GPS devices.

RE: Keyboard short cut,, XP pro

Does this Thinkpad keyboard customizer help?
Seems to me the quick launch bar is the best way to access the desktop, and it's available for XP or Vista - regardless of computer.

or, Windows D. I can remember D for Desktop - I don't know what M stands for (minimize all maybe?), but it works too.
I also agree with the Desktop quick launch button. If you read this Geeks on Tour newsletter, you'll see a 'Quick Tips' article about just this topic. It's toward the bottom.

RE: Two laptops on one aircard?

Yes, you can!
Instead of putting your aircard into one of your computers, you put it in a router like the Cradlepoint. Then the router makes a little Wi-Fi hotspot and both you and the DW connect wirelessly.
Are you sure you have *unlimited* access. Any new contract from Verizon is now limited to 5 gigabytes. 5 gigabytes is more than enough for most people. But, when you make two people, and one is a gamer ??

RE: Security Question

I personally think that using Zone Alarm at the highest setting might be a little too protective - you probably have to spend a lot of time configuring it to allow you to use the Wi-Fi networks ...
Just one thing I would add ... if you're using XP, you should turn off file and printer sharing for the Wi-Fi connection.
Control Panel
Network Connections
Right-Click on your wireless network and choose properties
UNcheck file and printer sharing
You most likely don't have any files being shared on your computer - so this isn't critical. But, if you don't need to share files or printers over the wireless network, then why not turn the feature off and be sure that no one on the network can see your files.
This is handled automatically with Vista when you choose 'Public Network'

RE: link from web to this site

What is it that's not working? Try a sample here.
If you click the link tool (the globe and two links from a chain). All you have to fill in is the top field: the complete URL ... URL means the address of the web page your are referencing, starting with http://
So, for my website, I could just type http://www.geeksontour.com where it asks for URL and I get:
http://www.geeksontour.com
If I also add the words 'my site' where it asks for text to be clickable, I get:
my site
You'll see the html code while you create the message, the links appear after you post.
Hope that helps.

RE: Win Visata Firewall

LUeno,
So, I take it that, if you turn Vista's firewall off, you *are* able to browse the Internet?
I haven't heard of Vista's firewall preventing browsing, but here are some settings for you to look at:
Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
the easiest way to get there is to click on Start and type 'Firewall' At the top of the list you should now see both 'Windows Firewall' and 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security'
Clck on Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. After allowing it, you should see:
http://www.geeksontour.com/images4rvnet/vistafirewalladvanced.gif
If any of the outbound connections are blocked, that could be your problem.
then again, Leaktest gets right through on my computer. I'm not as concerned about security as maybe you are. If my computer is up-to-date and my scans run clean every night, I'm satisfied. I *would* be concerned if I couldn't browse! No, *concerned* isn't strong enough ... I would be crazed if I couldn't browse.

RE: Wireless Router ?

What you are describing is called a Bridge, a Wireless Ethernet Bridge to be more precise. A Bridge does the opposite of a router.
A router takes a wired signal and makes it wireless. A Bridge takes a wireless signal and makes it wired.
Bridges are a great way to get good signal in an RV park Wi-Fi hotspot, BUT they require some geekiness in order to configure them. Most of them need to be reconfigured for every different hotspot.
Here's my article about Wireless Ethernet bridges.
Or, some samples:

RE: CELL PHONE INTERNET ACCESS

Tony,
I still havent' figured out how much it cost! LOL
I'm told that Broadband Access Connect for my phone (BBAC) is a monthly cost of $60. The customer service rep said as soon as I turn BBAC on, I will be charged $60 for one month. I can turn it off and not be charged for the next month.
I know people who have been using this feature for a long time (well 1 year is a long time in this industry!) and say that they turn it on and off all the time and are charged a prorated amount, about $2/day.
I've had the service since January and have only used it a few days in January and a few days in April. I can't find a charge of any kind on my bill!
It may have something to do with when your contract was made. We've been Verizon customers since 2003.
So ... worse case = $60 month by month. Best case = Free! Prorated to $2/day sounds good to me.

RE: CELL PHONE INTERNET ACCESS

I have Verizon, and I use my LG enV VX990 to connect using Broadband Access. I too was told that the phone didn't have a way to connect an external antenna, but it does. We uncovered every little hatch until we found it .. right under the camera lens, where it reads 2.0 megapixels. You need a straight pin to get the cover off. AND, make sure you get the correct antenna adapter for your phone - plugging it in with the wrong one can fry the phone.

Frank,
That was precisely my topic in a RV.net Blog article about removing old Wi-Fi network names.
The video shows how to do it in Vista, but the article includes instructions for XP.
